Our
yarns are 100% wool from the sheep of Manitoulin Island, Ontario,
Canada.
Fleece is collected from various sheep farmers on Manitoulin Island after their spring shearing. The raw fleece is then sent to mills for processing. No harmful chemicals are used in the processing, therefore, your yarn may contain small bits of vegetation. These small bits tend to fall out when knitting or can be picked out. The natural un-dyed yarn still contains a bit of lanolin.
Once your project is completed, our wool does not felt easily, so your item is machine washable and dryable. Freshisle Fibers wool is a dense, lofty wool and will become much softer and puffy after laundering. The natural also becomes much whiter.
We offer a pure Suffolk two-ply worsted/aran weight yarn, a chunky softspun yarn and a fingering weight single ply yarn that are a blend of Texel, Southdown, and Dorset.
Our most popular wool is our Double Down yarn, a mule spun, two ply fingering/sport weight yarn that is primarily Suffolk with some Southdown.
The dyed Freshisle Fibers yarns are hand-dyed in small batches. The natural dyes are obtained from the wildflowers, nuts, berries, barks, and my own garden flowers that grow on Manitoulin Island. Other colours are obtained from a variety of brands of acid dyes and commercial natural dyes. The nature of hand dyeing means that no two skeins will be exactly alike. Even though multiple skeins have been in the same dye pot, in the same batch, there will be slight variations between each skein.
Freshisle’s Herbal Salves and Soaps are handmade in small batches using quality oils and ingredients. Oils are infused with herbs, flowers, berries, and leaves grown or wild-crafted on Manitoulin Island. Some salves and soaps contain essential oils. Our products are very lightly scented. Many colours are achieved with the same natural dyes used in dyeing our yarns.
